Commercial pet food comes in many forms, shapes, and prices, but not all can be considered equal. It is very important to understand the differences when choosing a food for your dog or cat.

Natural and holistic pet food companies pledge to use high quality ingredients without adding fillers and by-products. These companies go the extra mile to add beneficial nutrients without adding unnecessary chemicals. Some of these foods seem like they cost a bit more, but we believe you will see a difference if your animals coats, energy, and better overall health. Please see our Products page to learn more about the brands we pride ourselves in carrying.

5 Natural Ways to Control Fleas and Ticks in the Triangle

Posted on May 14, 2015 by Paws In The City

Dog in field, khunaspix, freedigitalphotos.netMost residents of the Triangle look forward to the North Carolina summer; anticipating swimming, cookouts, and extra daylight hours spent outdoors. Unfortunately, common pests like fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes also love the hot and humid weather and can quickly become a nuisance to dogs, cats, and humans. Keeping pets bug-free is an important part of maintaining their overall health, and there are several ways to achieve results without turning to drugs or chemicals.

The natural care advocates at Paws in the City in Cary share these kinder, gentler ways to treat pests and parasites:

  • Citrus: Fleas are repelled by the natural compounds of citrus fruit. A few squeezes of orange or lemon juice rubbed into a pets fur will keep fleas at bay without causing harm to pets if ingested. A fresh, bright scent is a bonus!
  • Essential Oils: Ticks are known for carrying dangerous bacteria, and it’s important to regularly inspect pets for signs of tick activity. Many pet owners have had success with a bit of rose geranium oil rubbed onto their dog’s collar. However, cats can have bad reactions to essential oils, so leave felines oil-free.
  • Soap and Water: Don’t discount the power of good old fashioned hygiene. A bath with gentle shampoo or a little dish soap will effectively remove most (if not all) of the fleas on a pet. Because fleas don’t attach themselves to hair shafts, they simply fall off when submerged and drown.
  • Dress appropriately: Wooded and grassy areas are a haven for ticks, which wait in the wings until a passerby approaches, then grab on. Prevent ticks from attaching by fashioning “leg warmers” out of old socks, or using a pet t-shirt or sweater.
  • Home and yard maintenance: Vacuuming regularly, in addition to laundering and disinfecting pet’s living spaces, goes a long way in controlling any population of fleas that may have made it inside the home. Outdoors, consider introducing nematodes (microscopic, pet-friendly worms that are a natural predator of fleas) to the yard.

At Paws in the City in Cary, we believe that natural, organic, and holistic products and methods are an excellent option to achieve optimum health for all types of pets. By trying a few of the above natural remedies, pets can enjoy an itch-free summer without unnecessary exposure to harsh chemicals.
