Commercial pet food comes in many forms, shapes, and prices, but not all can be considered equal. It is very important to understand the differences when choosing a food for your dog or cat.

Natural and holistic pet food companies pledge to use high quality ingredients without adding fillers and by-products. These companies go the extra mile to add beneficial nutrients without adding unnecessary chemicals. Some of these foods seem like they cost a bit more, but we believe you will see a difference if your animals coats, energy, and better overall health. Please see our Products page to learn more about the brands we pride ourselves in carrying.

Should Triangle NC Pets Eat a Raw Food Diet?

Posted on July 22, 2015 by Paws In The City

Raw Meat- Suat Eman- freedigitalphotos.netAlthough raw food and homemade diets are gaining in popularity for North Carolina pets, they remain controversial in many respects. Pet food is not a one-size-fits-all proposition, and pet owners really need to think about a pet’s individual circumstances before radically altering its diet in any way. The expert staff at Paws in the City in Cary, NC aim to educate pet owners on the pros and cons of both commercial kibbles and homemade pet food.

Here are three important factors to think about before embarking on a raw food diet:

  • Special health concerns: Raw food diets are not ideal for all pets, especially for those with conditions affecting the kidneys or liver. The high protein content of raw food diets can exacerbate these problems. Pancreatic illness, digestive issues, and cancer treatments can also present challenges, so it’s always a great idea to consult with a veterinarian before switching to raw food.
  • The pet’s age: Due to inconsistencies in the vitamin and mineral content of raw food diets (especially if a pet owner is inexperienced), they are not recommended for puppies. To promote normal and healthy development, and avoid deformities and bone problems) a specific ratio of calcium and phosphorus must be present. Opt for commercial puppy food to get off to a good start.
  • Risk of contamination: Raw food can present risks for both pets and owners. Improper preparation and handling of raw meat could result in exposure to bacteria like salmonella and E. coli. Bacteria can also be expelled in the feces of a pet on a raw food diet, so extra care should be taken when cleaning the yard or litter box.

Of course, the above concerns aren’t unique to raw food. Any commercially processed food, cooked or uncooked, can be subject to the same issues. Knowing a pet’s health background, reading and understanding pet food labels, and working closely with a licensed veterinarian all go a long way in ensuring a much-loved pet gets the nutrition they need to thrive.

Are you considering incorporating raw meat, bones, fruits, or vegetables into your pet’s diet? Stop in to Paws in the City of Cary first. Our knowledgeable, educated staff here in the Triangle will help you make sense of options including natural, holistic, and organic food and treats!
