Commercial pet food comes in many forms, shapes, and prices, but not all can be considered equal. It is very important to understand the differences when choosing a food for your dog or cat.

Natural and holistic pet food companies pledge to use high quality ingredients without adding fillers and by-products. These companies go the extra mile to add beneficial nutrients without adding unnecessary chemicals. Some of these foods seem like they cost a bit more, but we believe you will see a difference if your animals coats, energy, and better overall health. Please see our Products page to learn more about the brands we pride ourselves in carrying.

4 Treat Tips that Make Triangle Pets Happy in the Triangle

Posted on April 23, 2015 by Paws In The City

Dog treats, stuart miles, freedigitalphotos.netDogs and cats across Cary and the Triangle love an occasional treat just as much as their human companions do, and pet owners love to spoil their pets with a delicious tidbit now and then. Additionally, pet treats make great rewards when using positive reinforcement training. However, treats come in so many shapes, sizes, and flavors; it can be overwhelming for pet owners to choose the best and healthiest option. With so many tasty treats on the market, how can pet owners determine the right type of healthy treat for their pet? Paws in the City wants pet owners to know that when choosing a pet treat, we should keep the same standards as when we choose our quality pet food.

Paws in the City offers these four tips for treats that will keep pets happy and healthy:

  • Follow the 90/10 Rule: A good rule of thumb is to ensure that pets get about 90% of their daily nutrition from a high quality pet food and only 10% from treats. Calorie requirements depend on age, size, and activity level. When unsure what a pets caloric needs are, consult with a veterinarian.
  • Read labels carefully: There are many low-calorie, healthy options when it comes to prepackaged treats. Some even have a more than one purpose, like cleaning teeth and freshening breath. Remember, just as with pet food, read each label to assess the nutritional value of the potential goodies.
  • Go natural: Many types of vegetables can pull double duty as treats, like carrots, green beans, or a spoonful of pumpkin puree. However, know that some human foods are toxic to pets (for example, dogs can’t tolerate grapes, garlic, or onions). Know what foods are dangerous for pets and be sure to avoid them.
  • Time treats optimally: Like humans, some pets would rather forego their nutritious kibble and fill up on snacks throughout the day. If that sounds familiar, try to time treats so they fall about halfway between each of the pet’s regular meals.

Treats are a great way to show pets some love. While healthy, high quality treat options abound, remember to avoid an “all you can eat” mentality. No matter how nutritious a treat may be, remember to monitor portions and stay within the pets recommended daily calorie intake.

Paws in the City carries a huge selection of natural, organic, and holistic treats for dogs, cats, and other pets. Stop in to Paws in the City today to find your pet’s new favorite treat and more!
