3 Important Tips to Help Pets Beat the Triangle’s Heat This Summer

ID-100165674Summer is a great time for family fun, for picnics and trips, and for outdoor activities. We all love to shed our winter coats and take time to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air in the summer months. Children and pets always enjoy frolicking outside when the temperature rises, but the summer heat can also be dangerous, for humans and for pets. Humidity can make the air thick and hard to breathe. While we want to encourage as much outside activity as possible, at Paws in the City we also want to help animals and people everyone stay cool and healthy in the summer heat.

When taking the family pet outside this summer, remember these important tips from Paws in the City:

  • Never leave a pet (or a child) unattended inside a vehicle: The Humane Society reports that temperatures inside a car can rise so quickly, even with the windows “cracked,” that on an 85-degree day, they can reach 102 degrees within 10 minutes, and 120 degrees within 30 minutes. The inside of a vehicle becomes a very dangerous place very quickly for pets and children.
  • Put a little ice in the pet’s water dish: We all enjoy a nice glass of ice water on a hot day. Pets do too! Pets need to stay hydrated, particularly if they are playing outside during hot summer days. Give them plenty of water, change it often; add the ice and keep the water dish in the shade throughout the day.
  • Make sure dogs and cats have all the nutritious food and supplements they need: When pets are healthy and strong, they are better able to withstand extreme conditions, such as summer heat and humidity. Natural foods and healthy supplements are important for overall well-being!

At Paws in the City, we are all about keeping pets healthy! We want everyone to enjoy summer fun, but remember to take special care of pets that can quickly get too hot. They need shade and hydration, just like their humans!
