4 Factors to Remember to Keep Pets Safe in the Triangle Summer

As temperatures hit the 90-degree mark and beyond, we are loving summer in the Triangle! At Paws in the City, our team of professionals are concerned about the health and well-being of all the wonderful pets in the Cary area in the hot summer months and throughout the year.

There are many fun outdoor activities for the family to do in the Triangle, including visiting the numerous parks and lakes around the region that are pet-friendly.

Paws in the City wants everyone to keep these four factors in mind for pet safety and summer fun:

  • Pet paws get hot on pavement and asphalt: Take the test – if a surface is too hot for a human to walk barefoot, it’s too hot for a dog or cat to walk on.
  • Pets can easily overheat: Know the signs. This is a good warning for humans, too. Heat stroke in pets is very similar. They can become disoriented, have difficulty breathing, or go into a stupor-like state. Keep pets and humans hydrated and cool!
  • All pets cannot swim: When taking pets around lakes, rivers, or even the neighborhood, lead them gradually into the water to be sure they are comfortable with it. Dogs may enjoy being out on the family boat, but they need to wear a life jacket like everyone else!
  • A pet’s hair actually protects it. Keep their fur trimmed and brushed, but do not shave the pet. While humans might like to get very short haircuts in the summer heat, pets actually need a layer of fur to protect them from sunburn.

Remember, good nutrition is important for keeping the family pet healthy this summer and throughout the year. At Paws in the City, we offer a full line of natural and holistic foods and treats, so Triangle pets can continue to be safe and healthy while enjoying the fun and sun of the Triangle summer.
